J & M's Hill Country Bar-B-Q

I’ll say that I’m still pretty new to southern food and every time I order catfish, I always get disappointed and just never ordered it... UNTIL my husband ordered catfish from J&M’s and this is probably THE BEST AND ONLY CATFISH I WILL EVER EAT! It was so fresh, cooked to perfection! I could not believe a catfish could be this simple and SO GOOD!!! So glad we got the large size order of catfish to take home. I also ordered the brisket and it was good as well! The sausage had a spice to it and gives a nice kick! It’s the spiciest sausage I’ve ever eaten at a restaurant and it tastes really good I had to take it home. And oh my goodness, I thought I had eaten the best potato salad of all time but J&M’s potato salad was unbeatable. I almost had to stop myself right when I tried it because I was overwhelmed by how good it tasted!!! I am not sure if they sell a tub of this potato salad but I want to get a ton to take home! This is the southern food I was looking for!! The only thing I was not really impressed is their mac and cheese. It was nothing special. Its neither good nor bad. It was just okay. The cornbread was okay as well. The potato salad was the winner for me! The waitress Barb was funny, super attentive and caring. Excellent service! Gave us the real southern hospitality and I will definitely come back! The price is not that expensive considering how much food you get. I can order one plate and share with one person for a quick lunch. Next time we come back I will try their pies! We just stopped by here during our visit to the DMV. We are from Killeen and wished this was closer to us but definitely worth the drive!

Since my oldest child was just a year and a half old, we've made it a cherished tradition to visit this particular restaurant almost every Saturday or Sunday. Now that my oldest is seven, we still eagerly look forward to our family meals there. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the staff always goes above and beyond to make us feel at home. The waitresses, in particular, are incredibly friendly and attentive; they've become like family to us over the years. What truly sets this restaurant apart is the consistently outstanding food. We've tried numerous dishes from their extensive menu, and I can confidently say that we've never had a disappointing meal in the six years we've been regulars. Each visit is a delightful experience, filled with the savory flavors and comforting dishes that keep us coming back for more. Every time we walk through the door, it feels like a familiar embrace, and I can’t imagine our weekends without this wonderful place.

Food is always amazing! People are wonderful. Sweet tea is perfectly sweet. Get a bag of crackers with your salad and plastic wear you could accidently stab yourself with (obviously didn't mean to.. but the knife didn't bend so great plastic utensils!) Salads come with lots of stuff but I take it all off lol

All you can eat BBQ on Saturday and Sunday. 26 per person is a steal. You can pick all your can eat catfish, or BBQ. When brought at the right timing, the bbq is very tender. Our initial plate wasn’t tender: meat didn’t leave pork bones. Our 2nd plate was amazing: meat fell off the bones easily.

I really enjoyed the food and menu! It's tastes great, they serve nice portions and it has a fun atmosphere. A good place to hang out with friends, coworkers and family.

Best chicken fried steak in Texas. Barbara and Cindy are amazing waitresses, the service was excellent and they were extra busy. The sides were great and a huge selection of pies if you have room. This whole dining experience was tried and true old school Texan.

J & M's Hill Country Bar-B-Q in Gatesville TX is one of my favorite places to get the best BBQ in the area. I always like to stop in here when I am traveling the back roads to Waco TX. I had the fried catfish and pinto bean dinner plate - the catfish was cooked to perfection! Fresh cooking oil makes all the difference when frying up catfish. Cheers to the cook! My mother had the BBQ Pork Dinners and it did not disappoint. I love the home made BBQ sauce and I asked if I could purchase some to take home. Of course they said! I highly recommend eating here the wait staff is friendly and helpful. They even have a drive through if you are just passing by and want to give this place a try. I have had the BBQ sandwich on another road trip and it was perfect.

We thoroughly enjoyed every aspect! They greet you when you walk in, seat yourself, our waitress was very friendly and personable. Unfortunately, I don’t remember her name. We had the Cowboy plate with Mac & cheese, pinto beans, & an appetizer of fried mushrooms. Also, had to get a banana pudding to go. Can’t wait to eat that later tonight! *Side note: even the ladies room was clean (both appearance and smell!) super cute rustic look!)
